A year in the making, last December, the band were delighted to share the stage with the Camden Youth Brass Band and their inspirational conductor Deirdre Waller-Box at Regent Hall to perform the world premiere of ‘Castle in the Sky’ by Robin Fiedler. Composer as a joint project for both bands through Making Music’s ‘Adopt a Creator’ scheme, the piece was the result of several workshops between Robin and the bands, which were used to generate the material for the work.
The piece was performed twice on the evening at the start and end of a fantastic concert where each group performed a programme of music individually as well as coming together for the premiere. The second of these was recorded for BBC Radio 3 and broadcast on the 5th of March 2024, which you can hear at the link below.
Regent’s set also included three further new works; the second performance of the March ‘Corfe Castle’ by Freddie Meyers, ‘Beyond the Light’ by Dr Liz Lane and the premiere of ‘Eris and Harmonia’ by the band’s composer in residence Franklin Onyeso, which was well received by the audience.
The programme also featured Peter Desmond as trumpet soloist in a lovely setting of the Norwegian folk song ‘Eg Veit I Himmerik Ei Borg’ and a singer from the Camden Music Service as soloist in ‘Defying Gravity’ from the musical ‘Wicked’.
We look forward to collaborating with the Camden Youth Brass Band and Robin Fiedler again in the future!
